NEW AND IMPROVED METHOD
Today, I realised how ambiguous and inaccurate my past method was...so here is my new method.
Hypothesis: Harmful ingredients such as Toluene and Formaldehyde have an impact on the durability of nail polish.
Aim: To find out the impact of harmful ingredients on the durability of nail polish.
Materials: Two nail polishes that do not contain Toulene and Formaldehyde, two nail polishes containing Toulene and Formaldehyde, Silicon Carbide abrasive paper, tape, block of wood, aluminium foil, stopwatch, q-tip, scissors, ruler
Risk Assessment:
Identify | Assess | Consequences | Prevention |
Inadvertently inhaling Toluene. (Harmful to health) | Moderate risk. | Causing symptoms such as tiredness, confusion, weakness, drunken-type actions, memory loss and causing liver damage and skin irritation. In high levels, affecting the kidneys. | Carrying out experiment in a well-ventilated room while attempting to not inhale heavily. Wearing a mask. |
Inhaling formaldehyde. | Moderate risk. | Causing symptoms such as watery eyes, headache, burning in the throat, and labored breathing. | Carrying out experiment in a well-ventilated room while attempting to not inhale heavily. Wearing a mask. |
1. Tape aluminium foil onto a flat surface in room temperature (25°C)
2. Apply one layer of one nail polish containing Toluene and Formaldehyde onto the aluminium foil.
3. Time the duration for the polish to dry onto the foil.
4. Record observations and results.
5. Tape abrasive paper against a block of wood.
6. Rub the abrasive paper against the foil
4. Record observations and results.
5. Tape abrasive paper against a block of wood.
6. Rub the abrasive paper against the foil
7. Observe the duration and resistance until it begins to peel or chip and record results.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 using the three other types of nail polish.
My independent variable would be the nail polish's ingredients. The dependent variable would be the duration of the nail polish applied.
